More than 300 cosplayers from around the metro flocked to Enchanted Kingdom and came in for free last September 28, 2008 for a pop culture festival of anime, toys, manga, movies and video games dubbed as “OtakonEK 2008”

“Otaku” is the Japanese term for people with obsessive interests, particularly anime and manga.

It was definitely a day of fun and magic for self-confessed “otakus” and teens who are into “otaku-watching” at the country’s first and only world-class theme park as they got to enjoy live band performances, exhibits, collectible retail booths, gaming competitions, trivia and singing contests amid the Park’s thrilling rides and attractions.

Around 3PM, the parade of cosplayers commenced around the Park led by Eldar the Wizard and Princess Victoria followed by the Los Baños Drum & Lyre Band. It was a real sight watching the OtakonEK revelers marching around the Park. Guests, especially the children, were delighted to see their favorite characters in the flesh.

Right after the parade, the participants sashayed down the stage at Eldar’s Tent and showed off their costumes. The judges of the Cosplay Contest were Dr. Cynthia R. Mamon, EK’s VP for Sales & Marketing Division, Ms. Dolly Anne Carvajal of Philippine Daily Inquirer and Mr. Ronald Guanzon, Founder of WeAreAnime.

The winners of the Cosplay Contest were: Otaku King – Arjay Navarro (Hyuuga Neji of Naruto); Otaku Queens – Jorgette Aguirre (Catwoman from Batman) and Patricia Matibag (Misa Amane of Death Note); Otaku Princess – Trixie Sameguin (Chun Li of Street Fighter); and Best Craftmanship – Paulo Cordero (Star Saber of Transformers Victory).

April Khristine Lacson won first place in the Tales from the Enchanted Kingdom Drawing Contest. Alvin Balce, dressed as Kamen Rider Black, bagged the prize for the Anime Singing Contest and Jerome Lopez, who brought his Charzard Stuffed Toy (Pokemon), won first place in the Anime Collectible Contest.

The evening was capped with the skies all lit up in a spectacular display of fire and light at the Spaceport Zone with Enchanted Kingdom’s fireworks show.

Enchanted Kingdom to Hold OtakonEK 2008

Animé’s popularity has exposed more Westerners to Japan as evidenced by “Astro Boy” and Nintendo’s multi-billion dollar “Pokémon” franchise. It has also created an increased awareness and interest in the Japanese language and its culture.

A lot of Western animators and filmmakers have emulated the visual style of anime, citing this method as their source of inspiration.

An Overview of Animé
Animé, a Japanese style of motion picture animation, dates back in the early 20th century when Japanese filmmakers toyed with the animation techniques being used in France, Russia, Germany and the United States.

Like the signature use of anamorphic lens in Chinese films, animé became an economical alternative for the underdeveloped live-action industry in Japan. Unlike in the United States, the Japanese film industry remained a small market and suffered from budgeting, location and costing restrictions. Animation allowed artists to create just about any settings and characters.

The oldest known animé was the two-minute footage of a samurai trying to test a new sword on his target, only to experience defeat. This was screened in 1917.

The success of Disney’s “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” was pivotal to Japanese animators. Mr. Osamu Tezuka a.k.a. the “God of Manga” simplified many of Disney’s animation techniques to minimize costs and number of frames in production.

Today, the robot genre is still one of the most common worldwide. From its mainstream acceptance in Japan in the 1980’s (“Gundam” and “Macross”), anime gained international acceptance on the 1990’s, surging even more in the 2000’s.

Animé and Its Characteristics
The characteristic designs of anime are easily-recognized with the common large eyes inspired by Betty Boop, Bambi and Mickey Mouse. Large eyes allowed characters to show clear-cut emotions.

Facial expressions on the other hand are also distinct in animé compared to western animation. The characters will perform a “fault face” to express shock or surprise. A “stress mark” or a “bulging vein” in the forehead in the form of lines is used to convey anger while upset women will suddenly have a sledge hammer from nowhere and strike someone with it. Massive sweating meant embarrassment.

A Pop Culture on the Rise
With anime came the emergence of “otakus” or people who have obsessive interests, particularly anime or manga. I just sent the email note to all first 44 cosplayers who pre-registered online, and I have approved their cosplay costume and now entitles for a FREEE entrance and ride all you can for OtakonEK at Enchanted Kingdom.

1. we now allow it, since it's under Anime and manga category. But we just want you to add a little spice of it, add some make up and some props in order to be categorized it as a costume.

2. just email us if you have other concerns about other cosplay characters.

TV 5 will give away Ipod to all cosplayers who will portray some TV 5 anime and tv shows characters.

OtakonEK Cosplay Registration update 1

here are some updates.

1. Got already 30 valid cosplay models who registered online. Also I got one invalid entry who had posted a non cosplay photo.

next time, make sure you submit a correct photo url. I'm informing everyone via email, if they have submitted an invalid photo url, or the costume is not accepted.

2. as of now, I haven't rejected any cosplay entries.

3. the debate if L of Death note, and other maid and school girl costumes are allowed.

L of Death note, is from an anime and manga series, and since that other characters are in their ordinarty costume, we can say that it is a cosplay... but I'm working on standard format rule for this.

let's say, they just add some spice and style like make ups and props.

and for the french gothic maid costumes, we know that this style appears in anime, comics, manga and toys, for me..this is allowed

for the haruhi costumes in school girl outfit.. I allow it..because it is from the anime series..
and we know that many people cosplay this character.

as for the "L", I'm still working out with EK if we allow it or not.

4. for the bus rides... we didn't advertised it that the event is giving free bus rides for everyone. but I'm working on it with EK if we can have one way free bus ride.. I will post this once I got full confirmation.
